Qinghai is a large province in northwestern China. It is located on the northeastern part of the Tibetan Plateau. The province is surrounded by Gansu to the northeast, Xinjiang to the northwest, Tibet to the south, and Sichuan to the southeast. Its coordinates range between 31°36′–39°12′N latitude and 89°24′–103°04′E longitude.
Qinghai covers an area of about 720,000 square kilometers. It is one of the largest provinces in China by size. The provincial capital is Xining, which sits in the eastern part of Qinghai.
2. Why is Qinghai Important Geographically?
Qinghai is known for its high altitude. Much of the province is above 3,000 meters(9,800 feet), with mountain peaks like Kunlun and Qilian ranges reaching over 5,000 meters. It has large grasslands, mountains, deserts, and lakes. The famous Qinghai Lake, the largest saltwater lake in China, Chaka Salt Lake is located here.

Qinghai also plays an important role as a gateway. It connects the heart of China with the Tibetan Plateau and Central Asia. In ancient times, it was a key area for trade and travel.
3. Qinghai and the Silk Road
Qinghai was an important part of the ancient Silk Road. Caravans and traders passed through its lands on their way between China, Persia(Today’s Iran), and the West. The route across Qinghai via Xining (Qinghai’s capital) provided access through mountains and harsh Taklamakan Desert.
Many ancient towns and trading posts were located in this region. It was a meeting point of cultures, goods, and ideas.
4. Notable Landmarks Defining Its Location
Qinghai Lake: Asia’s largest saltwater lake (4,317 km²) sits in the northeast, marking the province’s geographic heart.
Chaka Salt Lake: Located in the Qaidam Basin, this mirror-like lake highlights Qinghai’s unique northwest terrain.

Salt Lakes of Qinghai
Qinghai is home to many salt lakes. These lakes are part of the Silk Road landscape. The most famous one is Chaka Salt Lake. It is located about 300 kilometers from Xining. The lake is often called the “Mirror of the Sky” because of its reflective surface.
Other salt lakes include Qarhan Salt Lake and Dongtai Salt Lake. These lakes are rich in minerals and have been important for trade and salt production since ancient times.

Qinghai To Lhasa (Tibet): ~1,200 km south via the Qinghai-Tibet Highway.
Qinghai To Dunhuang (Gansu): ~550 km north, a key Silk Road hub.
Qinghai is a unique region in western China. Its location on the Tibetan Plateau and along the Silk Road made it a vital part of trade routes in history. With its vast landscapes and salt lakes, Qinghai continues to attract explorers and travelers interested in its geographic importance and history.
